19 May 1840Sheet 8 — The Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Sheet
Six rangatira (chiefs) of Ngāti Raukawa, and Ihākara Tahurangi and Te Kehu (possibly the wife of Rere-tā-whangawhanga, who signed on 16 May at Waikanae) of Te Āti Awa, signed the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) copy of the Treaty of Waitangi on the Kāpiti Coast, possibly at Ōtaki, on 19 May.
Missionaries Henry Williams and Octavius Hadfield witnessed the signatures. Williams handled the negotiations as Hadfield wished to keep his distance from the British government.
Ihākara Tahurangi signed his own name as ‘Tahurangi’, while the other seven signatories made a distinctive mark next to their names, which were written by Williams.
